Practice Accountant

About the Role:

As a Practice Accountant, you will be a key part of our finance team, responsible for managing the full accounting cycle for a wide range of SME clients. You will bring your knowledge, accuracy, and hands-on experience to deliver high-quality financial services while also supporting junior staff and contributing to the ongoing improvement of processes and client service.

Key Responsibilities:

• Client Accounting: Preparation of accounts for SMEs, including annual financial statements, management accounts, and financial reports in accordance with relevant standards.
• Software Expertise: Confident use of Sage 50, QuickBooks, and Xero to manage accounts, reconciliations, VAT returns, and payroll processing.
• Tax Compliance: Preparation and submission of VAT, corporation tax, and personal tax returns.
• Client Interaction: Liaise directly with clients to provide guidance and resolve queries, building strong long-term relationships based on trust and excellent service.
• Practice Environment: Work within a busy accountancy practice, managing multiple client accounts and deadlines simultaneously.
• Mentorship & Oversight: Support junior team members, review work, and assist in their professional development.
• Process Improvement: Actively contribute to refining internal systems and processes for better efficiency and accuracy.

Requirements:

• Experience: A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, ideally within a practice serving small to medium-sized businesses. Candidates from industry backgrounds may also be considered if they have strong software experience and a client-focused mindset.
• Certifications: Membership in a recognized accounting body is required, though membership in ACCA is not essential.
• Technical Proficiency: Solid working knowledge of Sage 50, QuickBooks, and Xero accounting systems.
• Financial Reporting: Strong understanding of financial regulations, standards, and reporting frameworks applicable to SMEs.
• Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy in preparing financial documents, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and compliance.
• Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively liaise with clients and team members.
• Professional Integrity: A strong ethical foundation and commitment to confidentiality, accountability, and professional standards.

Desirable Skills:

• Practice Experience: Prior experience in a practice environment with a portfolio of SME clients.
• Multisector Knowledge: Understanding of accounting practices across various industries.
• Process Digitization: Experience implementing or adapting to cloud-based accounting tools and systems.
• Analytical Thinking: Ability to interpret financial data to guide business decisions.
