Job Profile: IBMi Application Administrator
Role Summary
Responsible for the operation, administration, and continuous improvement of the IBMi (AS/400) platform and associated enterprise applications. The role ensures system availability, data integrity, and efficient business process support across manufacturing, logistics, and finance domains.
The German client’s IBMi environment includes MAPICS, a highly integrated ERP suite with strong interdependencies between modules such as Materials Management, Production Planning, Purchasing, and Finance.
Responsibilities
1. IBMi System Operations
- Operate and monitor IBMi systems (jobs, subsystems, batch processing, system performance)
- Manage system resources (CPU, memory, storage, job queues)
- Perform system backups, recovery procedures, and high availability checks
- Apply PTFs, OS updates, and system patches
- Monitor and resolve system-level incidents and performance bottlenecks
2. ERP / MAPICS Application Administration (Advantageous)
- Administer and support MAPICS XA modules (e.g. IM, MRP, COM, PUR, PDM/EPDM)
- Maintain application configuration, parameters, and control files
- Support end users in troubleshooting functional issues
- Coordinate and test application changes, fixes, and enhancements
3. Data & Interface Management
- Monitor and manage data integrity across MAPICS applications and interfaces
- Handle batch jobs, data loads, and interface processing (EDI, external systems)
- Analyze and resolve data inconsistencies (e.g. inventory, orders, production data)
- Support data migration and system integration activities
4. Security & Compliance
- Manage user profiles, roles, and authorizations on IBMi and within ERP
- Ensure compliance with internal IT policies and audit requirements
- Maintain system documentation and operational procedures
- Support audits (internal/external)
5. Change & Release Management
- Plan and execute system changes (transport, configuration, releases)
- Coordinate testing (unit, integration, user acceptance)
- Support deployment and post-go-live stabilization
6. Incident & Problem Management
- Act as 2nd/3rd level support for system and application issues
- Perform root cause analysis and implement permanent fixes
- Work closely with dev team, business departments and external vendors
7. Continuous Improvement
- Identify optimization potential in system performance and business processes
- Automate recurring operational tasks
- Support modernization initiatives (e.g. interfaces, UI improvements, reporting)
Required Skills
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of IBMi (AS/400):
- CL, job management, subsystems, libraries, object management
- Backup & recovery concepts
- Experience with similar ERP platforms on IBMi (e.g. SAP, JD Edwards, Infor) — knowledge of MAPICS / Infor XA / GEAC ERP is a strong plus
- Familiarity with MAPICS XA core modules (IM, MRP, PUR, COM, PDM/EPDM) is advantageous but not required
- Database knowledge (DB2 for i)
- Experience with batch processing and job scheduling
- Basic knowledge of:
- RPG (preferred but not mandatory)
- SQL on IBMi
- Interface knowledge (EDI, flat files, APIs)
